The most common skin changes during pregnancy
Skin changes are common during pregnancy, affecting up to 90 percent of women, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical and Cosmetic Dermatology.
Researchers note that these changes can include hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin), melasma (a type of facial hyperpigmentation), and stretch marks. Hormonal changes, increased blood flow, and other physiological changes also contribute to changes in your skin.
“Common post-pregnancy skin changes include stretch marks, melasma, acne, hyperpigmentation and sagging skin. Other problems include dryness, itching and sensitivity. The abdominal skin is most affected due to stretching and weight gain. The facial skin may develop hyperpigmentation, dark circles and wrinkles,” says Dr Rashmi Sriram, Consultant Dermatologist at Fortis Hospital, Rajaji Nagar, India. Hair changes, such as postpartum hair loss, are also common.
These postpartum skin changes can typically last from 6-12 months, while some cases may last longer.
