What is hyaluronic acid?
Dr. Banani Choudhary, dermatologist at HN Reliance Foundation Hospital & Research Center, Mumbai (India) said that hyaluronic acid (also known as hyaluronic acid, HA) is a natural compound found in the human body, mainly in the skin, joints, eyes and connective tissues.
It is a polysaccharide (multi-molecular sugar) with excellent water-holding capacity, helping to maintain moisture in tissues and supporting the lubrication function of joints. It also has the effect of supporting the wound healing process, helping to regenerate cells and heal quickly.
Hyaluronic acid is also one of the very popular skin care active ingredients that every skincare enthusiast should know.
All ages can use
According to Dr. Banani Choudhary, hyaluronic acid is great for the 25-30 age group as their first skincare routine because it is non-irritating when used on the skin.
Can be used once or twice daily as needed, followed by sunscreen during the day as part of a basic skincare regimen.
For the 30-40 age group, in addition to a serum or cream containing hyaluronic acid, another anti-aging molecule such as retinol or ferrulic acid or resveratrol can be added, depending on skin type.
Hyaluronic acid fillers can also be injected at any age. For example, for nasolabial folds and cheeks, doctors can use moderate concentrations of hyaluronic acid to fill in deep wrinkles.
Hyaluronic acid injections are also used for cheek contouring and augmentation, jawline shaping, rhinoplasty, and lip augmentation in cosmetic surgery.
Note
Dr. Banani Choudhary cautions that you should consult a dermatologist before using it.
If done under the supervision of an experienced dermatologist, we will know how much to use and at what depth to inject to give the most natural look to the skin without any side effects.
Hyaluronic acid is safe in both topical and injectable forms. It is biodegradable, breaking down in the skin over 9 to 12 months.
Inflammation at the injection site may occur for three days, which will then resolve on its own. Although patients can be re-injected after 1 year, many patients still see benefits even if they do not re-inject.
