Dr. Ravi Shankerji, general practitioner at Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangalore (India), said that the habit of sleeping with your mouth open can cause many health problems such as dry mouth, dental problems, sleep apnea due to obstruction (OSA) and snoring. This can reduce sleep quality and affect mental health.
The quantity and quality of sleep are directly linked to mental health, helping to reduce stress, anxiety and depression, explains Dr Shankerji.
Applying mouthguard while sleeping can help limit mouth breathing, thereby minimizing the above health problems and improving energy.
When you breathe through your nose, the air is filtered and moisturized, making it easier for your body to get enough oxygen without much effort.
However, when this method is applied to people with ADHD, its effectiveness has not been clearly demonstrated.
The effect of mouth rubber on ADHD
According to Dr. Shankerji, some social media content creators believe that sleep appetite can help improve ADHD symptoms. But in fact, this is still a controversial method and there is not enough research to confirm that it works on people with ADHD.
ADHD is an easily diagnosed neurodegenerative development disorder, manifested through symptoms such as loss of concentration, hyperactivity and suddenness.
Although sleep apnea has not been shown to treat ADHD, sleep quality and breathing ability can still affect ADHD symptoms.
Dr Shankerji emphasizes: "Improving sleep and breathing properly can help reduce some symptoms of ADHD, but just sticking your mouth while you sleep is not a treatment."
Home remedies for ADHD
ADHD is a neurodegenerative disorder with no cure yet. Treatment mainly includes medication, behavioral therapy, and dietary changes.
While some home remedies can help relieve symptoms, they cannot replace conventional treatment.
Dr Shankerji recommends: "Patients with ADHD should consult a doctor before making any major changes to their treatment plan."
In short, although sleep apnea can help improve sleep quality, it is not a ADHD treatment. To manage this disorder, patients should seek scientific treatment methods and support from a specialist.
