According to records, the intersection between National Highway 1A and Soc Vo street, National Highway 1A bypass, Vo Van Kiet street and National Highway 60 (National Highway 60 roundabout), belonging to Soc Trang ward and An Ninh commune (Can Tho city), has 5 road branches flowing in. With complex traffic structure and large traffic volume, this area poses a potential risk of serious traffic accidents.
In fact, many tragic accidents have occurred in this area. Most recently, at about 3:40 PM on January 5, 2026, a truck with license plate 29H-741.27 driven by N.V.H, traveling from Can Tho City to Ca Mau, when reaching the roundabout of National Highway 60, collided with a motorbike running from the direction of An Nghiep Industrial Park, causing 2 people on the motorbike to die on the spot.
Mr. Nguyen Van Long - a worker working at An Nghiep Industrial Park - said that National Highway 60 roundabout is the intersection of many major roads and is also the main traffic route for workers going to work every day.
In the morning from about 5 am to 6 am, workers go to work very crowded because they are preparing to start the shift. In the afternoon, from about 4 pm to 6 pm, when the shift ends, a lot of people and vehicles also flock to. However, large cars passing through this area often run quite fast, so accidents happen very suddenly," Mr. Long reflected.
According to Mr. Long, the current roundabout is small in scale, while the number of motorbikes, trucks, and container trucks pouring in at the same time makes vehicles go close to each other, and visibility is limited. "Just a small collision in front, the car behind, especially the truck, is very difficult to handle in time," Mr. Long said.
Sharing the same concern, Mr. Tran Van Thanh - a passenger car driver who regularly travels through this road section - said that more than 10 days ago an accident occurred at the roundabout, causing traffic congestion lasting more than 1km for many hours. "At that time, I was driving from the old Soc Trang City to the center of Can Tho City when an accident happened in the opposite direction. When I returned, the traffic jam had not been resolved," Mr. Thanh said.
A resident living near the roundabout said that this area has many coffee shops, the situation of buying and selling, gathering to encroach on roads and sidewalks is quite common, partly obscuring the visibility of traffic participants. "An accident happens every few months," this person said.
Faced with the above situation, recently the Department of Construction of Can Tho City has coordinated with the Traffic Police Department - Can Tho City Police, Road Management Office IV.4, Soc Trang Ward People's Committee and Soc Trang National Highway 1 BOT Co., Ltd. to conduct a field survey at the intersection between National Highway 1A - Soc Vo street - National Highway 1 bypass - Vo Van Kiet street - National Highway 60.
The Department of Construction proposed that Soc Trang National Highway 1 BOT Co., Ltd. supplement a number of items on National Highway 1A within the scope of the BOT project, including: repaining the decelerator lines according to regulations; installing a yellow lightning warning system at the intersection area; supplementing reflector indicators on the roundabout island.
Soc Trang Ward People's Committee proposed to direct relevant units to paint decelerator lines on Vo Van Kiet and Soc Vo streets; repair and supplement the lighting system around the intersection area; relocate the billboard at the intersection between National Highway 1 bypass and Vo Van Kiet street to ensure visibility for traffic participants.
Specifically on National Highway 60, the Can Tho City Department of Construction will directly paint the speed limit lines according to regulations so that traffic organization at the intersection is ensured to be safest, especially during the upcoming Lunar New Year.
