Average income of 11 million VND/month is still difficult to recruit workers
Mr. Huynh Van Choi - Chairman of the Trade Union of Viet Hung Joint Stock Company (District 12, Ho Chi Minh City) - said that the company needs to recruit nearly 200 more workers to meet the demand of customers' orders. The company only organizes overtime for a maximum of two days/week, 3 hours of overtime per day; workers' salary is 9 million VND/month; average income is 11 million VND/month with many benefits such as bonuses for holidays such as April 30, September 2, Tet, 13th month salary, vacation...
“Currently, the company has many orders, and even has to refuse some shirt processing orders because it does not have enough human resources to meet the demand. However, recruiting workers is difficult,” said Mr. Choi.
Mr. Tran Nhu Can - Chairman of the Trade Union of Phong Phu International Joint Stock Company (Thu Duc City) - also said that the order situation has been stable until the end of the year, even many orders from traditional customers have reached the end of the first quarter of 2025. The number of these orders accounts for about 20%.
To meet the new projects, the company needs to recruit about 500 workers. The company recruits and trains unskilled workers with a salary of about 5-6 million VND and after about 1 month they can meet the company's requirements; skilled workers have a salary calculated based on labor productivity from 8-9 million VND/person/month and an income of about 10-11 million VND/month.
Ms. Ngo Thi Nga - Chairwoman of the Nha Be Garment Corporation Trade Union (District 7, Ho Chi Minh City) - said that due to stable orders until the end of the year, the company needs to recruit more workers. However, it is currently very difficult to recruit a large number of workers at once, and the company can only recruit a few dozen workers each week.
Young workers do not like the garment industry.
Mr. Tran Thanh Son, Head of Administration - Human Resources Division of Song Ngoc Garment Company (Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City) - said that the company also needs to recruit about 100 more workers to meet orders during Christmas, even accepting workers aged 40-45 who are healthy enough to work but it is not easy to recruit workers. According to Mr. Son, currently many young workers do not like to work in the garment industry.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai - Deputy General Secretary of Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS), Head of VITAS Representative Office in Ho Chi Minh City - said that due to political turmoil in Bangladesh, many textile and garment orders here have been transferred to Vietnam. In addition, the political situation in Vietnam is stable, Vietnam participates in many free trade agreements, so the general trend of enterprises from many countries increasing investment in Vietnam and the shift of many enterprises from some countries to Vietnam also contributes to the increase in textile and garment orders from Vietnam. However, the general trend of these orders is not much, the delivery time is short, and the price is not high.
Explaining why many businesses have difficulty recruiting workers, Ms. Mai said that wages in the textile industry are not high, and many other industries also have many orders, so there is competition for labor. In addition, during times of fluctuations such as the COVID-19 pandemic or difficulties with orders, many businesses are forced to cut labor, leading to workers being calculating when looking for jobs.
This fact is also recognized by the Ho Chi Minh City Employment Service Center. Ms. Nguyen Van Hanh Thuc - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Employment Service Center - said that statistics on the demand for job seekers - jobs looking for people on the Ho Chi Minh City job information portal according to the criteria of 27 occupations in August 2024 showed that there were 7,591 people looking for jobs and 9,861 jobs looking for people, meaning that the number of job seekers is less than the recruitment demand.
Of which, the number of people looking for unskilled labor is 1,963 people, and the demand for unskilled labor is 5,433, accounting for 55.1% of the total demand for people. In the footwear and garment industry, there are 959 people looking for jobs and the demand for people is 1,324 people. That is, the number of recruitment needs in the footwear and garment industry is nearly 1.4 times higher than the number of job needs in this field.
