The 38-year-old female worker has a very difficult family situation. Her eldest son has cancer and has been undergoing treatment for 15 years. Each time he is treated, she has to pay 5-6 million VND for his medicine. Recently, as his health has improved, this number has decreased to 2-3 million VND. Previously, because of his illness, the eldest son had to drop out of school. Now, he has returned to school and is in the same 6th grade as her second son.
The medical expenses for her older child and the family's living expenses depend on her income of about 10 million VND/month from her job. Although she has her own house and does not have to pay rent, the life of the three mother and children is still very difficult and deprived. She herself has many illnesses and poor health.
Not only Ms. Xuan, many female workers, many of whom are elderly, are very excited to participate in the program. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue - a worker at a garment company in Viet Yen town - scanned the QR code following the instructions of a union official of Bac Giang province in the hope of winning valuable items at the program. Ms. Hue is a disadvantaged group and has been a worker for 10 years. "When a garment company opened near my house, I decided to work there to have a more stable salary and support my children," Ms. Hue said.
Receiving the discount coupon, she was very happy and said she would walk around and find any suitable items, utensils or food to buy for her family.
Meanwhile, at the zero-dong booth, Ms. Do Thi Thuy (a garment worker) submitted her coupon and chose a box of instant noodles as a gift. The female worker, born in 1982, said that she received this gift to use as breakfast for her whole family. "I heard about this program from the grassroots union, so right after finishing my shift, I came here to receive the gift," Ms. Thuy shared.
