Unexpectedly, electricity bills nearly double
The family of Ms. Pham Thi Thao, a worker at Sai Dong Industrial Park (Phuc Loi Ward, Hanoi City) is currently renting at Lane 293 Ngoc Thuy Street (Bo De Ward, Hanoi City).
Ms. Thao's family has 4 members, 2 couples and 2 children (the older child is in grade 6, the younger child is in preschool at 3 years old). Ms. Thao said that because she has a small child, her family has to buy all kinds of household items such as air conditioners, refrigerators, air frying pots, magnetic stoves, water purifiers, etc. The average electricity bill in the winter months is about 1 million VND/month; in the peak summer months, it can be up to more than 2 million VND/month. "In particular, during the summer vacation, my children are in the hot season, so my house is air conditioned almost all day. If I don't turn on it, the children at home will be in a hurry and cannot stand it" - Ms. Thao said.
Having just received the electricity bill in June 2025, Ms. Thao said that the increase compared to May was 240,000 VND.
"The amount of 240,000 VND may not be large for many people, but for a worker's family like us, it is a significant dish. The couple's salary is about 18 million VND/month, we have to have a lot of money to rent a house and make ends meet for the whole family. Every arising amount must be carefully considered..." - Ms. Thao said.
Electricity bills account for more than 5% of total income
Mr. Nguyen Van Thuc (residing in CT4, Thien Loc commune, Hanoi) said that the electricity bill in June 2025 of his whole family will increase by 200,000 VND compared to May 2025, at 1,100,000 VND. Previously, my familys electricity bill in May 2025 was VND900,000 for about 180kWh of electricity. This electricity bill has also increased by 200,000 VND compared to April 2025" - Mr. Thuc said.
The couple worked in the nearby Thang Long Industrial Park. The total income of the couple is about more than 20,000,000 VND. Thus, electricity bills account for more than 5% of the family's income.
According to the regulations on the retail price structure of electricity, effective from May 29 and the most recent adjustment to the average retail electricity price after the effective date of this decision.
Accordingly, the retail price list for electricity is shortened from 6 to 5 levels, the lowest electricity price (level 1) is about 1,984 VND/kWh and the highest (level 5) is 3,967 VND/kWh, excluding VAT.
In response to many people reporting a sudden increase in electricity bills in June compared to normal, Hanoi Electricity Corporation (EVN Hanoi) said that the amount of electricity consumed increased according to the law every year in the summer months, combined with adjusted electricity prices and children taking a summer break at home, leading to a total of electricity bills in June that households have to pay more than the previous month.
