Vibe coding: New trend bringing people into the technology world
Google CEO Sundar Pichai believes that vibe coding, also known as inspirational programming, is a new trend that allows anyone, even those without technical knowledge, to create apps and websites just by describing ideas in natural language.
In the Google for Developers podcast, Pichai shared that the ability to describe project goals and let AI write code has made programming much more interesting.
According to Mr. Pichai, everything is becoming more accessible and this trend will continue to grow strongly in the future.
The concept of vibe coding was born by Andrej Karpathy - co-founder of OpenAI - earlier this year. The core of this trend is to let an AI-powered programming platform like Windsurf, Codex or Cursor automatically convert user requirements into executed code.
This opens up great opportunities for those who are not technology-professional but still want to build products or experiment with ideas.
This shift is not limited to popular users. Major technology corporations are rapidly adopting vibe coding to accelerate software development.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella once revealed that 30% of the company's new source code is written by AI. Sundar Pichai also said that more than 25% of Google's source code is now AI-generated.
Since ChatGPT was launched in 2022, the trend of using AI to program, write content, fix errors or even build products has spread strongly.
With the emergence of AI models with better reasoning capabilities, the process of converting natural language into code is becoming more accurate and reliable, promoting vibe coding to become a familiar choice for many developers.
In the podcast, Mr. Pichai emphasized that vibe coding helps people visualize ideas quickly, even if they are not good at programming.
Too dependent on AI to write code can cause risks
However, Pichai also warned that relying too much on AI to write code can be risky, especially for projects that require high accuracy and security.
Mr. Pichai believes that experienced engineers still play an essential role in testing, evaluating and being responsible for software quality.
Despite the controversy, vibe coding is becoming the focus of AI development strategies of large companies.
Google recently introduced Gemini 3, a model they call the best ever for vibe coding, with the ability to create an app with a more intuitive and beautiful interface.
Sundar Pichai said he is curious to see what more the world will create from this trend. Although it is not clear whether the current exaggeration is sustainable, vibe coding is certainly reshaping the way humans program and create technology products.
