As the technology world enters the hottest stage of the general artificial intelligence (AGI) race, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has chosen a more cautious and realistic approach.
While admitting his excitement at AGI's potential, Nadella said the key question is not "When will AGI be achieved? , but "What benefits does it bring to people? ".
In a conversation with Dwarkesh Patel and founder SemiAnalysis Dylan Patel, Nadella emphasized that AGI can rival the industrial revolution if developed in the right direction.
However, he affirmed that humanity is still in the first or second stage of this journey.
One of Nadella's consistent viewpoints is that AI must take people as the center. He especially loves the definition of scientist Raj Reddy, who compared AI to angels guiding or perceptive expansion ministries that support humans rather than replace them.
Regarding this concept, Nadella will help reshape the debate that is becoming an increasingly superficial image of the power of AI.
Another controversial topic that Nadella strongly opposes is the idea of a model for everyone. When asked if a single model could dominate the entire future economy, he was straightforward: If that happens, the game is over. But I don't believe it will happen."
According to Nadella, limitations in field, geography, culture, demand and data will make it impossible for any model to take up the huge design space of AI.
The future will be a coexistence of many open-source models, border models and diverse ecosystems.
Regarding the question who will benefit the most in the AGI world?, Nadella believes that the value will lie in the combination of models, data and tools.
He warned that even pioneering models could face the curse of a victor, when big innovations are easily copied and transformed into commodities.
Those who own new integrated data and systems are really at a advantage, Nadella said, dismissing the simple thinking that the future of AI is just the current talk interface.
Instead, he expects a generation of autonomous actors to operate across the entire corporate infrastructure, changing the way organizations operate in the next decade.
From the perspective of one of the most powerful figures in the technology industry, Nadella's message that AGI is only meaningful when it expands human capacity, promotes sustainable growth and respects the diversity of the global AI ecosystem.
