If you are satisfied with what Google offers in Gemini, you may keep this virtual assistant as the default when holding the source button.
However, the new update to ChatGPT beta has made it available as a default replacement for another virtual assistant.
Currently, there are many artificial intelligence (AI) assistants, from Google's Gemini to Perplexity and many other platforms. The two names above allow users to set up as the default assistant on Android, meaning that when using a source key (which has existed since the Google Assistant era), the system will call the selected assistant.
This is especially helpful if you regularly use another AI assistant instead of Gemini.
According to Android Authority, the latest beta version of ChatGPT (1.2025.070) has added the option to set the application as the default assistant on Android.
In the default digital assistant settings, ChatGPT now appears as an option alongside some other assistants, as long as they are installed.
Since this feature is still in the testing phase, ChatGPT on Android is not really as complete as Gemini or Perplexity. When the source button is pressed, ChatGPT's voice mode will be activated with a bubble coating on the screen.
ChatGPT becoming a default virtual assistant option on Android marks an important step forward for OpenAI in competing with other AI platforms.
Although there are still some limitations in the testing phase, this feature opens up opportunities for users to access a more flexible AI assistant, especially those who regularly use ChatGPT to search for information, work support or communication more naturally than traditional assistants.
In the coming time, if OpenAI continues to improve the user experience and optimize performance, ChatGPT could become a formidable competitor in the field of mobile virtual assistants.
