The US Navy admits it cannot build Trump-class warships before 2030, raising doubts about the feasibility of the program announced by Donald Trump.
A US Navy official said on December 23 (US time) that the new force is implementing the design and can only start building ships in the early 2030s, after completing cost estimates to include in the budget proposal for fiscal year 2027.
An unnamed source familiar with the project confirmed that the shipbuilding process will not be able to start before 2030, although the new class of warships is expected to take advantage of the achievements of the Next Generation missiles Defense Ship Area (X) program.
Previously, Mr. Donald Trump announced on December 22 that the US would build a series of warships under his name. Although called armored ships, these ships are said to have shapes and weapons similar to current large-sized coral ships and axis ships.
Following Mr Trump's announcement, the US Navy announced that it had signed a contract with Bath Steel Industrial Company under General Dynamics and Ingalls Shipbuilding Factory under Huntington Ingalls Industrial Group.
These two units will carry out the requirements for design, technical and analysis for the BBG(X) identification warship class, and support the government's design team in completing the overall drawings. The contract implementation period is expected to last 72 months.
The US Navy also plans to sign a contract with Leidos Gibbs & Cox to support the design in the early stages of the BBG(X) program.
According to published information, the Trump-class warship is expected to have a water propagation capacity of 30,000-40,000 tons, equipped with hypersonic missiles, electromagnetic fireworks and AI technology applications. Mr. Trump has said the US Navy can receive 20-25 ships to form the "Golden Squadron".
A US official said there is no specific plan for when to launch the USS Defiant, the first ship in this class. The US Navy admits the program is still in a very early stages, making the prospect of deploying a Trump-class fleet in the near future far away.
