A diagram believed to be of the A20 Pro chip shows that Apple may make many changes to the processor structure, notably the 7-core GPU and 96-bit memory interface.
According to a Weibo user, the diagram is recreated based on the position of the chip's welds, then compared with the chip level image to determine the position of the processing blocks. The results showed that the A20 Pro has a CPU configuration including 2 performance cores and 4 energy-saving cores, along with a 7-core GPU.
Sources predict that energy-saving cores will share 8 MB of L2 cache, up from 6 MB on the A19 Pro. Meanwhile, performance cores are said to still retain 16 MB of L2 cache.
The size of the system-level cache has not been disclosed. However, sources say that this cache is difficult to shrink because the A20 Pro is said to integrate a new image signal processor and neural processor.
GPU adds one core
The A20 Pro is said to use a 7-core GPU, up from 6 cores on the A19 Pro, equivalent to an increase of about 16%.
More notably, the memory interface can also be expanded from 64-bit to 96-bit when using LPDDR5x RAM. This is a 50% increase in interface width, which can significantly improve memory bandwidth.
Memory bandwidth plays an important role in graphics performance. Therefore, the combination of a more core GPU and a wider memory interface may help the A20 Pro improve graphics processing capabilities compared to the previous generation.
The A20 Pro is expected to be introduced by Apple along with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. This chip may also appear on Apple's first folding screen iPhone model.
