Many users have a habit of checking reviews of places on Google Maps before going somewhere. However, many opinions also show doubts when reviews appear too good.
Google is now taking steps to make it easier to spot fake reviews.
Google is now issuing a warning to businesses that apply, stating: “Suspected fake reviews have recently been removed from this site.”
A user on X (formerly Twitter) recently discovered a change in how reviews are handled on maps for a UK company.
Google hasn't confirmed this feature or where it will be available yet, but the related support page has just been updated to make it available globally.
In it, Google outlined the restrictions that may apply to businesses that violate its fake review policy. One of these is that “business profiles will display a warning to customers that the fake review has been removed.”
Other temporary restrictions may include not accepting new reviews or removing existing reviews. If this happens, the business owner will receive an email from Google and can appeal the decision.
In fact, while fake reviews can come from businesses trying to boost their ratings, they can also come from people trying to discredit them.
