Based on code analysis of the Google Photos 7.29 application version, the Remix feature allows users to apply creative art styles such as anime animation or clay models to backed up photos.
The Remix feature is still in the testing phase, locally called bluejay. According to the discovered code chain, users can access Remix through the "+" button at the top of the application interface. However, only photos that have been backed up in Google Photos can use this function.
Not only supporting individual photos, Remix also has the ability to apply them to photo collections in the Moments section, previously called Memories. This opens up greater creative potential, as users can turn all their memories into unique artistic versions.
The appearance of Remix comes as AI photo creation tools are becoming more and more popular, especially after ChatGPT integrated the ability to turn portraits into Ghibli style characters or the Funko Pop model. This personality-rich image transformation trend is spreading on social media and Google seems to be preparing to join that wave.
Notably, Google also focuses on responsible implementation. The code reveals that there will be content barriers to block inappropriate images, and users can create or save their favorite Remix versions. Providing such control helps limit the common risks with AI photo creation technology.
However, this feature has not been officially announced by Google and it is unclear whether it will be widely released. If introduced, it is not ruled out that Remix will be included in the Gemini Advanced subscription package, especially for users who do not use Pixel phones.
