Google and Anthropic expand cooperation, targeting super AI

Google is expected to invest up to 40 billion USD in Anthropic, providing cash and computing capabilities, strongly promoting the global artificial intelligence race.

According to Bloomberg, Google (Alphabet's subsidiary) will immediately pour $10 billion into Anthropic, valuing the company at around $350 billion. The remaining investment, worth $30 billion, will be disbursed if Anthropic achieves the set performance targets.

This move comes as Anthropic has just introduced a new AI model called Mythos. This is considered the company's most powerful system to date, with important applications in the field of cybersecurity.

However, due to concerns about the risk of abuse, Anthropic currently only provides limited access, while coordinating with a number of partners to assess risks.

The development of large-scale AI models is causing demand for computing infrastructure to skyrocket. Not only requiring enormous processing power for training, these systems also require continuous operation capacity at very high costs.

This is the factor that makes the competition in the AI industry increasingly revolve around the ability to access computing resources.

In that context, companies like OpenAI have signed a series of agreements worth hundreds of billions of USD with cloud, chip and energy providers to ensure resources. Anthropic is also not standing aside when continuously expanding infrastructure cooperation.

Recently, Anthropic signed an agreement with CoreWeave to increase data center capacity, and received an additional $5 billion investment from Amazon.

According to long-term agreements, this company plans to spend up to 100 billion USD to ensure about 5 gigawatts of computing power in the future.

Despite being a direct competitor in the field of AI modeling, Google still plays a role as an important infrastructure provider for Anthropic.

This AI company is heavily dependent on Google Cloud, especially tensor processors (TPUs), which are specialized chip lines for AI that are considered powerful compared to Nvidia products.

The cooperative relationship between the two sides has been established in advance. Anthropic has cooperated with Google and Broadcom to develop custom AI chips, with the goal of accessing about 3.5 gigawatts of TPU-based computing power from 2027.

The new investment from Google continues to expand the scale of this partnership, as Google Cloud is expected to provide about 5 gigawatts of capacity in the next 5 years, while leaving open the possibility of further increase in the future.

In terms of finance, Anthropic is attracting great interest from investors. After reaching a valuation of 350 billion USD in February, the company is said to be able to reach a valuation of up to 800 billion USD.

In addition, Anthropic is also considering plans to issue initial public offerings (IPOs) in the near future.

In the context of AI becoming a race for infrastructure and resources, Google's tens of billions of USD investment shows that technology giants are willing to spend heavily to gain an advantage in the era of artificial intelligence.
