Honor has decided to join the vibrant robot development race in China, with the goal of repositioning its position as an artificial intelligence (AI) company in the context of the increasingly competitive Android phone market.
In March 2025, Honor announced a worth-of-US$10 billion Honor Alpha plan, aiming to build an open AI ecosystem where devices such as tablets, smartwatches and home appliances are seamlessly connected, providing a comprehensive smart experience. Finally, the ambition of this plan is to connect people with general artificial intelligence (AGI).
China is leading in the field of human-shaped robots, with more and more startups participating. Last month, Beijing held a half-marathon of robots, which only a few of the 21 robots participated in.
Nvidia Corp CEO Jensen Huang said the industry has the potential to become a trillion-dollar industry, especially the creation of robots capable of taking on jobs in factories for workers.
Honor's expansion into the robotics sector reflects the efforts to diversify the product portfolio of Chinese companies, such as Xiaomi - a unit involved in the production of electric vehicles, semiconductors, in addition to common electronic devices.
Honor, like rivals Vivo or Oppo, is building its own AI services to integrate into software for smartphones and other devices.
