Cooperating with NVIDIA, Vietnam still lacks "rare" resources to master AI

NVIDIA proposes 4 strategic cooperation directions with Vietnam, according to experts, upgrading GPU infrastructure will play a very important role in breaking through AI.

In a working session with the Ministry of Science and Technology on August 20, NVIDIA representatives proposed 4 key cooperation directions with Vietnam, including: Coordinating to build a large-language model (LLM) owned by Vietnam; Exchange on infrastructure development and GPU capacity (graphics processor); Human resource development, startups, AI research and education (artificial intelligence); Connecting Vietnam's AI ecosystem with the globe...

Talking to Lao Dong, a technology engineer who has worked for many years for a large technology corporation in the US emphasized that Vietnam really needs GPUs - a very important component for AI because they have thousands of small kernels processing in parallel, helping to increase model training speed and run machine learning algorithms many times faster than CPUs (central processing units).

According to NVIDIA, Vietnam currently has about 10,000 - 15,000 GPUs, while some countries like South Korea already have about 50,000-60,000 GPUs and are planning to expand to 200,000 - 250,000 GPUs in the next 5 years.

Vietnam really needs GPUs because the supply is extremely scarce, many countries have to queue for several years and NVIDIA is the world's number one GPU supplier. Therefore, any cooperation that commits to increasing the number of GPUs for Vietnam is very commendable and importantly, it must be truly received," this expert commented.

Regarding building a large language model (LLM) owned by Vietnam, according to this expert, this is the dream of the Vietnamese technology community, but this must be a national-scale strategy because Vietnam currently lacks too many factors (GPU, human resources, legal, capital, orientation...) so he supports it but it will be difficult to complete in the short term.

Also according to him, the proposal for NVIDIA to develop human resources, startups, and connect the Vietnamese AI ecosystem globally is commendable, but the most important thing is to "see the real results", because he has heard a lot about this before.

Meanwhile, Mr. Dinh Tuan Huy - Chief Technology Officer of EON Tech - a unit that has just become a global strategic partner of OpenAI emphasized: "Nvidia's cooperation proposal is a positive signal, showing that Vietnam is being increasingly recognized as a potential partner in the global AI value chain.

Cooperation directions on infrastructure, AI models, human resource development and support for technology businesses are also consistent with the Government's orientation to promote science, technology, innovation and digital transformation.

The notable impact is not only in the scale of investment or the number of GPUs, but also in the ability to help Vietnam improve technological capacity, master data, develop an engineering team and create more jobs with high intellectual content and added value in fields such as AI, data, cloud, information security and digital infrastructure operation”.

According to him, in the long term, the effectiveness of cooperation should be seen in how deeply Vietnamese businesses and human resources can participate in the value chain, create how many practical products and retain how much value in the economy. Vietnam needs to continue to proactively receive advanced technology from the world, and at the same time gradually improve its self-reliance and self-strengthening capacity in technology and human resources.

With the proposal from NVIDIA, in the coming time, the Ministry of Science and Technology will coordinate to concretize 4 contents into a common action plan, which clearly defines tasks, resources and implementation roadmap.
