Instagram has just announced the expansion of the "Youth Account" feature in India, with a series of changes aimed at strengthening the protection of young users and stricter content control.
Accordingly, all users under 18 years old will automatically be put into the adjusted 13+ standard content mode.
The noteworthy point is that teenagers cannot change this setting on their own without parental consent. This approach is built similarly to the age-based film classification system, to ensure displayed content is appropriate for the age group.
The parent company Meta Platforms Inc. said that the goal is to create a safer online environment where young people only access controlled content.
Although there is still a possibility of some elements such as strong language or light suggestive content, the platform is committed to minimizing these cases.
One of the important changes is tightening the content filtering policy throughout the system.
In addition to existing regulations on adult content or offensive images, Instagram will now strongly restrict posts containing vulgar language, dangerous behavior or content that may encourage harmful behavior.
In addition, content related to alcohol and stimulants such as marijuana will also be strictly controlled. These adjustments help bring the content standards of the platform closer to the familiar film classification guidelines, thereby making it easier to understand and apply to young users.
The update system also affects how users interact on the platform. Teenagers will not be able to follow or interact with accounts that regularly post inappropriate content.
Conversely, these accounts are also limited in their ability to contact or interact with young users.
The search feature is also significantly upgraded. Sensitive keywords, including content related to self-harm or stimulants, will be completely blocked, even if users intentionally misspelle to bypass the system.
Not only that, restricted content will not appear in any area on the platform, from the news feed, Stories, Reels to Explore or even in links shared via live messages.
Instagram is also refining the application of artificial intelligence to ensure suggestive content and feedback are appropriate for teenagers.
This helps limit the risk of unsuitable AI content appearing in an environment for young users.
For parents, the platform provides additional control tools through the "Content Limited" mode.
When activated, this mode will further tighten content display and limit how teenagers interact, such as commenting on posts.
Currently, the changes are being implemented in India and are expected to soon expand to many other countries.
