Meta is reportedly testing a chip developed by the company itself to serve the training process of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, in order to reduce dependence on hardware manufacturers such as Nvidia.
According to Reuters, this chip is designed to handle specialized AI tasks and is manufactured in collaboration with TSMC (a leading chip manufacturer today). Meta is currently conducting a small-scale trial and will expand production if the results are positive.
Meta has used custom chips for AI before, but only to operate models, not for training.
As Reuters pointed out, some of the company's previous chip design projects have been canceled or scaled down due to failure to meet internal expectations.
This year, Meta plans to spend $65 billion in investment capital, much of which is on Nvidia's GPUs. If it can cut even part of this cost by switching to using internal chips, this will be a big step forward for the social media giant.
