Meta has just launched a major update for Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses, adding a series of new features based on artificial intelligence (AI), notably the ability to enter text by hand gestures through a nerve-sensing bracelet.
According to Meta, the gesture virtual writing feature has now been widely deployed for users of WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and even default messaging applications on Android and iOS. Previously, this technology was only for early access users when Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses were launched.
The system works by combining smart glasses with Meta's nerve bracelet. The device will recognize small movements of the wrist and finger, then convert them into text displayed directly on the messaging application. Users can compose messages without touching the phone or physical keyboard.
Meta said this technology was developed to bring a more natural communication experience, while expanding the interaction capabilities of smart wearable devices in the everyday real environment.
In addition to the ability to enter data by gestures, Meta also introduced a new "display recording" feature for Ray-Ban Display glasses. This tool can combine images from the glass screen, the user's actual viewing angle and surrounding sounds to create a complete video.
According to Meta, the new feature helps users share a more vivid real-life experience, instead of just recording videos from a regular camera. This is seen as a step towards bringing smart glasses closer to mixed reality devices.
The positioning support capability of the glasses is also significantly expanded. Currently, the pedestrian direction feature is available throughout the United States and some major cities such as London, Paris and Rome. Users can receive directions directly through the interface displayed on the glasses without looking at the phone.
In addition, Meta also added a live subtitle feature for voice messages on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram. This tool helps users easily track text message content in many different situations.
Not only focusing on end users, Meta also opens a developer preview program. Programmers can now create and deploy applications for Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, including web-based applications.
The new move shows Meta's great ambition in the field of wearable computing and AI-integrated smart glasses.
The company is aiming to turn Ray-Ban Display into a versatile device that can take on the role of communication, positioning, recording and application support, instead of just a specialized technology accessory.
