In recent years, Meta has continuously added AI features to its applications. The company even experimented with AI-generated characters with their own profiles and personalities, but later eliminated them because they were judged strange and unnecessary.
Now, Meta continues to experiment with a new controversial feature: using AI to suggest comments to users on Instagram.
Jonah Manzano, a user on X who often discovers new features on social media, has discovered an Writing with Meta AI option on Instagram. This feature allows users to receive AI-generated comments for posts.
According to the video posted by Manzano, users participating in the experiment will see a pencil icon next to the comment bar under each post. When clicked, Meta AI will analyze the image and suggest comments.
Meta confirmed via email to TechCrunch that: We regularly test new features so that users can use Meta AI in many different parts of the application, such as comments, news feeds, groups and searches, making the experience more fun and useful.
It is not yet clear whether this feature will be widely rolled out and when. Meta has also tested the AI-generated comments feature on Facebook last year.
However, many people may not welcome this feature, especially those who think that friends deserve sincere comments, instead of AI-generated formulated sentences.
Some users also hope that Instagram will return to the real period, less pressured to express themselves. Therefore, adding AI comments can be considered unnecessary and lose the authenticity of the platform.
