Reuters reported that on August 19, Russia's media watchdog Roskomnadzor said it was imposing sanctions on ByteDance's TikTok, Telegram messaging app, Zoom video platform, Discord chat app and Pinterest.
In a statement, Roskomnadzor said the measures were taken in response to companies not deleting illegally posted content. The agency will continue to maintain sanctions until the technology groups comply with Russian regulations.
However, Roskomnadzor did not disclose specifically what those sanctions would be. The agency said it will use search engines to warn users about content that violates Russian law.
Previously, a Russian court fined Azamon's online video platform Twitch about 34,000 USD and Telegram about 184,000 USD for storing content that Moscow said contained "fake" information related to the conflict in Ukraine.
In July, Russian lawmakers passed a bill that would impose more severe penalties on foreign information technology companies that violate Russian law.
