The number of uninstallments of the ChatGPT mobile application in the US has skyrocketed by 295% in just one day, immediately after information appeared that OpenAI reached a cooperation agreement with the US Department of Defense.
Data provided by Sensor Tower (a US mobile application market data and analysis company) shows that consumer reactions occur almost instantly.
On Saturday, February 28 (local time), the number of ChatGPT deinstallations in the US increased by 295% compared to the previous day.
Meanwhile, the average daily uninstallation rate in the last 30 days was only 9%. Along with the wave of application deletion, the number of downloads of ChatGPT also decreased by 13% on February 28 and continued to decrease by another 5% on Sunday.
Before the cooperation information was announced, the download volume of this application had increased by 14% on Friday.
Contrary to the development of ChatGPT, the Claude application developed by Anthropic recorded strong growth.
Previously, Anthropic announced that it would not cooperate with the US Department of Defense because of concerns that AI could be used for citizen surveillance or integrated into fully automated weapon systems when the technology is not safe enough.
According to Sensor Tower, Claude's downloads in the US increased by 37% on Friday and 51% on Saturday. Not only that, Claude rose to number 1 in the free app ranking on the US App Store at the weekend and maintained this ranking until March 2. This is a jump of more than 20 places compared to a week earlier.
Data from Appfigures (a mobile application market data analysis company, headquartered in the United States) also shows that for the first time, Claude's total daily downloads in the US surpassed ChatGPT.
According to estimates by this unit, Claude's increase even reached 88% on February 28. Globally, Claude is currently the number 1 free iPhone app in six countries including Belgium, Canada, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway and Switzerland.
Meanwhile, negative reactions are also shown through the application evaluation system.
Sensor Tower recorded a 7-75% increase in 1-star ratings for ChatGPT on Saturday and continued to increase by 100% on Sunday. Conversely, 5-star ratings decreased by 50% in the same period.
Another analysis unit, Similarweb, said that the number of Claude downloads in the US last week was about 20 times higher than in January. However, Similarweb noted that this growth may be affected by many other factors.
The above developments show that US users are clearly expressing their views on decisions related to AI applications and the defense sector.
The competition between AI platforms is therefore not only limited to technological capabilities, but also extends to ethical issues and development orientations.
