Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu believes that Iranian nuclear facilities may reach "inviolable" status in the next few months, forcing Israel to take urgent action.
“Iran has recently begun building new facilities, locations, and underground bunkers to help their ballistic missile and atomic bomb programs become inviolable in just a few months,” Netanyahu said on March 2 (local time). He warned that if they do not act immediately, there will be no more opportunities and Tehran may target, threaten or extort the US and other countries.
Al Jazeera reported that on the same day there were loud explosions near the nuclear facility and airbase in the city of Isfahan, central Iran. Iranian Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Reza Najafi said that the nuclear facility in Natanz was attacked by Israel and the US on March 1.
Iran's nuclear program is one of the reasons Israel and the US cited when launching the attack campaign in June 2025, accusing Tehran of approaching its nuclear bomb manufacturing capabilities. US President Donald Trump said after Operation Night Hammer, Washington warned Iran not to rebuild its nuclear program elsewhere, but Tehran ignored and did not give up on pursuing nuclear weapons.
Mr. Trump emphasized that Iran's possession of nuclear weapons is "unacceptable", so he ordered the military to attack to stop Tehran's nuclear and missile programs. He said that this is the last chance to eliminate the threat.
Meanwhile, Mr. Najafi affirmed that Iranian nuclear facilities are guaranteed to be safe and only serve peaceful purposes. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said on March 2 that the agency did not record any signs that nuclear facilities were damaged or attacked but did not state reasons other than information from Iran.
The US and Israel launched a large-scale attack on Iran from February 28, destroying many areas and killing senior officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran responded with missile and drone launches towards Israel as well as US military bases in the Gulf countries.
