Women and beauty pressure on dating apps

Women using dating apps tend to have plastic surgery to become more beautiful, according to an Australian study.

dating sites have become an essential and effective tool for finding your other half. Users can scan dozens, even hundreds of files in an accumulated manner.

However, with too many faces put forward, even the smallest flaw can quickly become a nightmare. In fact, an Australian study shows that women who use these websites tend to have plastic surgery to become more beautiful.

Research results in the journal Computers In Human Behaviour confirmed that women using dating apps tend to change their appearance more, both professionally and through plastic surgery.

The study was conducted by the University of South Australia (UniSA), based on an analysis of the behavior of 308 local women aged 18 to 72. Nearly half of these have used dating apps in the past two years, and 20% of the participants said they have undergone a cosmetic procedure, either injection or surgery.

Naomi Burkhardt, a bachelor's degree in psychology from UniSA and the leader of the research, explained in a press release emphasizing that the intuitive nature of dating apps, which prioritizes image-based records, is the main reason why women want plastic surgery.

But in addition to pursuing physical perfection, this study also highlights worrying psychological effects on women. It shows that body dissatisfaction tends to increase, the appearance of eating disorders, accompanied by anxiety...

Based on their findings, researchers propose a number of ways to limit these harmful effects. For example, co-author of the study, Lauren Conboy, recommends reviewing algorithms to prioritize personality-based compatible over appearance. She also proposed integrating self-imaging awareness modules or even exercises to help users stay away from cosmetic procedures.

This is even more urgent as love is increasingly digitalized. According to eHarmony's forecast, by 2040, more than 70% of love relationships can be formed online. This figure highlights the importance of reviewing dating apps so that they do not maintain unrealistic beauty standards, which often put a burden on women.
