Cybersecurity challenges for heavy industry companies

NGUYỄN ĐĂNG |

Statistics on the cybersecurity challenges facing heavy industrial companies with geographically dispersed infrastructures show an alarming reality.

According to data released by Kaspersky on October 22 based on a wide survey of cyber security worldwide, 45% of companies face frequent cyber incidents several times a month, while only 12% experience cyber incidents once a year or less.

Heavy industrial companies often operate across multiple locations, with distributed infrastructure systems that include manufacturing plants, branch offices, research centers, and other logistics facilities.

Geographically dispersed nature leads to many challenges such as: logistical difficulties, communication barriers, obstacles in coordinating activities, maintaining consistent quality standards and ensuring compliance with local government regulations.

In addition to the above challenges, heavy industrial companies with distributed infrastructures often face issues with cybersecurity and IT infrastructure management.

According to Kaspersky's report "Managing Enterprises with Geographically Distributed Infrastructure: Challenges and Solutions", 49% of manufacturing companies said the biggest challenge was detecting and responding effectively to cybersecurity incidents. In addition, monitoring the implementation of security measures (46%) and building a unified security policy (42%) were also identified as difficult problems.

According to cybersecurity experts, cyber incidents that arise at heavy industrial companies often result in production losses, financial losses and risks affecting the company's reputation.

To minimize the risk of cyber incidents and comprehensively protect assets and production processes at industrial companies, cybersecurity experts have recommended using operational technology security solutions (OT XDR) such as KICS.

This solution can support 100 monitoring points, providing unlimited options that allow businesses to build software-managed networks between branches within the company.

For businesses that need to centrally manage their networks on a single interface, SD-WAN solutions are the ideal choice. This solution integrates and synchronously manages different communication channels and network functions across the entire enterprise network, thereby optimizing application operations, supporting the construction of a stable network system and maintaining efficient operations at all business locations distributed in many different geographical areas.

Businesses can also combine the two solutions to scale their infrastructure while ensuring network service quality and traffic prioritization for Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).
