An important feature has been discovered by developers in the source code of iOS 26, even though it was not announced by Apple at WWDC 2025. That is the ability to update weather data via satellite connectivity - a feature that can become a lifeline in many emergency situations.
This feature allows the iPhone to download the latest weather forecast even without a mobile network or Wi-Fi. Users will need to point their phones to the sky to receive satellite signals, similar to the Emergency SOS feature that has appeared in the iPhone 14. After a successful connection, the device will automatically receive weather reports and warnings of hazards related to the current location.
Updating the weather via satellite is very meaningful for people who often travel to remote areas, such as mountain climbers, long-distance walks or camping. It is also especially useful in natural disasters that disrupt network infrastructure, helping users avoid falling into a state of losing information in critical situations.
This feature is considered the next step in Apple's strategy to expand its satellite ecosystem, following up functions such as sending messages and sharing locations via iMessage when not connected.
However, Apple has not yet released an official statement on whether this weather update feature will be available for free or will require a paid subscription package. Based on the example of Emergency SOS being free for the first two years, it is likely that this will also be a fee-based service in the future.
The initial implementation scope may be limited to some regions such as the US, Canada and Europe. It is not yet clear when this feature will expand to other countries as well as the list of supported iPhone models.
Apple is continuing to affirm its leading position in integrating satellite technology into mobile devices. With iOS 26 expected to be officially released in the fall and a public beta launching in July, Apple may create a new standard that will make it impossible for competitors like Samsung to stay on the sidelines.
