China accuses Nvidia of violating antitrust law

Thanh Hà |

Nvidia violated China's antitrust laws when it acquired Mellanox in 2020.

According to preliminary investigation results, China's market regulatory agency said on September 15 that Nvidia had violated the country's antitrust laws and that Beijing would continue to investigate the US semiconductor giant.

At the end of last year, the State Market Management Agency of China (SAMR) opened an investigation with Nvidia regarding the sale of Mellanox and a number of deals made during the buyback process.

Nvidia acquired Mellanox technology company in 2020 under a deal approved by China at that time under certain conditions. Mellanox is a company specializing in providing network solutions for data centers and servers.

In a preliminary investigation, SAMR said that Nvidia violated China's antitrust laws regarding the Mellanox acquisition deal and its accompanying terms in that deal.

The preliminary investigation results were released in the context of US and Chinese officials holding a day of trade talks in Madrid, Spain.
