According to Xinhua, HALF's linear accelerator in Hefei city has successfully created and transmitted an electronic beam. This is an important step in the process of building a fourth-generation synchrotron radiation base in the low energy range.
HALF operates at a design energy level of 2.2 gigaelectronvolts (GeV), using interference-limited storage ring technology. This is also a key national science and technology infrastructure project of China.
This facility creates a high-intensity, homogeneous light source, likened to a "hypermicroscope" that helps scientists study the microstructure of matter.
Compared to third-generation synchrotron radiation sources, HALF is expected to create soft X-rays with luminosity and combination 100 times higher. This technology can support research with higher accuracy and sensitivity. Including research on material structure and changes in electronic, chemical, and material properties states.
Mr. He Zhigang - Chief Engineer of the beam pump system said that the successful creation and transmission of the electronic beam is an important step of the project. The quality and stability of the beam directly affect the operation of the storage ring, beam path and rear experiments.
In the next phase, the electronic beam will be put into a storage ring for trial operation. HALF will then proceed to operate the entire system.
When completed, HALF is expected to add to China's existing synchrotron radiation facilities, focusing on other energy ranges. This facility will serve research in materials science, life science and energy science, with research directions such as high-temperature superconduction, new energy batteries, aerospace and advanced materials.
According to Mr. He Zhigang, after completion, HALF will be open to scientists inside and outside China, providing a research platform in fields such as quantum information, energy, environment and life sciences.
