Meta has started rolling out a new feature called message Summaries on WhatsApp, which allows users to quickly grasp unrolled message content with a few leading strokes. All are handled by artificial intelligence without affecting privacy.
This feature uses "Private Processing" technology, a secure data processing method that Meta introduced in April. Accordingly, AI can process the content of messages in WhatsApp without transferring or storing user data on Meta's server.
When the feature appears in the app, users will see a Priedate Summary status above un read messages. Just a click on it, Meta's AI will automatically create a content summarization.
For now, message Summaries will be deployed to WhatsApp users in the US, using English. Meta said it is planning to expand to other countries and languages this year.
Meta recommends this as an ideal solution for users to keep up with the conversation if they miss messages, especially useful in large and vibrant chat groups. However, AI is not yet completely reliable in all cases, as Apple's recent problems with notification summarization as an example.
Notably, Meta affirmed that the deployment of AI does not harm the privacy of WhatsApp - a platform that is already outstanding for end-to-end encryption.
The company also published a blog article and technical document explaining how " Private Processing" works. Basically, this method is similar to the Private Cloud Compute technology that Apple applies to process AI without accessing user data.
WhatsApp messages will be processed in a safe cloud environment, without content storage and without interference in the processing.
All are optional. Users must proactively request a summary before it is created and the default feature is turned off.
