Sexual intercourse rate at 30 years low
CNN cited the results of the 2021 General Social survey, which said that 26% of Americans aged 18 and over have not had sex at one time in 12 months. This is not just an pandemic effect, but a part of a long-term trend.
The two years with the highest rate of adults reporting that they have not had sex were 2016 (23%) and 2018 (23%) - the last two times the survey was conducted. Before 2004, the highest rate of Americans who said they didn't do "there" for a whole year was 19%.
The 2021 survey is also the first time that the rate of Americans having sex once or less a month has reached 50%. This figure in 1989 was 35%.
One of the reasons is the lower marriage rate and the aging population, but that does not explain everything. Of couples married under the age of 60, 26% had sex once a month or less in 2021. In 1989, that number was 12%. The 1980s were actually better for sex.
The rate of living together drops to a 30-year low
About 62% of Americans aged 25 to 54 are married or co-mingled, according to a 2021 research from the Pew Research Center. This includes 53% of married people and 9% of those living on trial. This figure is much lower than 71% of couples living together in 1990, with 67% married and 4% living together.
You may think that the growing rate of unmarried people living alone is due to the increasingly high education level of women, who do not need financial support from men. However, the statistics tell a different story. People who are better educated and those with higher salaries tend to live with their partner or get married the most. According to a Pew poll, many people would not get married if they did not think it was financially feasible.
The rate of unmarried men living alone (10 points) is higher than that of women (7 points) compared to the average in 1990 also increased.
Low rate of partners
The general social survey has been going on since 1986, asking participants if they have a stable partner. Last year, 30% of adults aged 25 to 54 (the same age as Pew's research) reported that they did not have a stable partner. In 1986, the figure was 20%.
In fact, the rate of people aged 25 to 54 who say they do not have a stable partner has never reached 23% before 2010. Since then, the rate has been 25% or more in all surveys.
The divorce rate is decreasing
There is an optimistic figure in the survey that the divorce and wedding cancellation rate is at its lowest level in the century in 2019. There are 2.7 divorces and canceled marriages of over 1,000 people in the population. This figure dropped from 4 to 1,000 in 2000.
Therefore, it is not surprising that the divorce rate among young people has decreased the most. This is the group with the least chance of getting married, and those who seem to do better in moving towards a marriage have a high chance of success.
