Lai Chau Provincial Police said that at around 4:30 p.m. on July 2, at Km76+650 National Highway 4D, passing through Binh Lu Commune, Lai Chau Province, a serious landslide occurred from the positive slope to the road, killing one person.
The victim was identified as Nguyen Van Cuong (born in 1981, residing in Vai village, Bat Xat commune, Lao Cai province).
At the time of the incident, Mr. Cuong was driving a motorbike carrying his wife, Ms. Giang Thi Minh (born in 1982), traveling from Lai Chau to Lao Cai. Due to heavy rain and slippery roads, Ms. Minh got out of the car and walked behind.
When reaching Km76+650, rocks and soil from the positive slope suddenly collapsed onto the road, dragging Mr. Cuong and his vehicle into a deep ravine on the negative slope.

Immediately after receiving the information, Lai Chau Provincial Police directed functional units to urgently deploy forces, coordinate with local authorities to organize the search for the victims.
At around 6:00 p.m. the same day, the rescue team discovered Mr. Cuong's body at a location about 200m from the landslide site, under the negative slope.
According to information from the Traffic Police Department, Lai Chau Provincial Police, on the evening of July 2, at Km76+650m of National Highway 4D, landslides continued, vehicles could not move, causing complete traffic jams.
To facilitate the circulation of vehicles, the Traffic Police Department noted that vehicles moving from the old Lai Chau city to the provinces to Hanoi and Lao Cai when reaching Km64 of National Highway 4D (Son Binh and Tam Duong Intersections) turn onto National Highway 32 in the direction of Than Uyen district (old) to move along National Highway 279.
The route from Hanoi to Lai Chau is the opposite route. The time for repair and remediation will be announced by the Traffic Police Department later.
