According to research published in Kidney International Reports, ginseng contains a key group of active ingredients called ginsenosides, which have the ability to regulate immunity, fight inflammation and protect cells from oxidative damage.
Some initial studies have found that ginsenosides may help improve microcirculation in the kidneys and support blood pressure control, an important factor for patients with kidney failure.
How to drink ginseng suitable for people with kidney failure:
Consult your doctor before using
Each patient with kidney failure has different levels of damage and renalfiltration index (GFR), so the dosage of ginseng cannot be applied together. Patients should consult a specialist or nutritionist before including ginseng in their diet.
Especially for people who are on dialysis or have high blood pressure, diabetes, and common complications, taking ginseng on the spot can disrupt electrolytes or interact with medication.
Use with small doses, intermittently
For people with stable kidney failure (phase 1-3), ginseng can be used in low doses, about 1-2g of dried ginseng/day (equivalent to 1 slice of dried ginseng), and should only be used for 2-3 weeks, then rest for 1-2 weeks to monitor the body's reaction.
Experts at the Mayo Clinic (USA) say that ginseng can cause increased heart rate, insomnia or blood pressure disorders if overdose or is taken continuously. For people with kidney failure, these reactions can become more complicated due to the poor ability of the kidneys to excrete.
Drink in the morning, avoid using at night
You should drink ginseng in the morning or before 2pm to limit the impact on sleep.
Not to be taken with stimulants
When drinking ginseng, absolutely do not take it at the same time as coffee, alcohol or other supplements containing caffeine or cardiovascular stimulants.
On the other hand, do not eat ginseng if you are experiencing high fever, acute inflammation, bloating or chronic insomnia.
Choose pure ginseng, of clear origin, avoid mixed products, preservatives or flavorings - which are an additional "burden" for the kidneys.
During the time of taking ginseng, it is necessary to monitor blood pressure, heart rate and conduct periodic kidney function tests, avoiding uncontrolled use.
