According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. BS Bui Thi Nhung - Vice President of the Vietnam Nutrition Association, Head of the Nutrition Department of Sun Hospital, gout patients should build a balanced diet and limit foods that increase uric acid (a natural waste created during the body's breakdown of purines).
1. Maintain a balanced diet
People with gout need to ensure a balance between groups of substances including carbohydrates, protein and fat, and allocate food reasonably in each meal.
A scientific diet will contribute to controlling uric acid levels and supporting the prevention of acute gout episodes.
2. Limit purine-rich foods
Patients should limit foods high in purines such as red meat, some seafood, and foods that may increase uric acid.
Reducing the amount of purines in the diet will help limit the formation of urate crystals deposited in the joints.
3. Limit bone broth and sweets
In addition to purine-rich foods, people with gout should also limit bone broth, thick broth and confectionery, and sugary drinks.
These foods can increase uric acid in the blood, making the risk of gout attacks recurring higher.
4. Combine nutrition with long-term disease control
Nutrition plays an important role in the gout control process but needs to be combined with health monitoring and treatment according to doctor's instructions.
Maintaining a proper diet and controlling uric acid will help reduce joint pain, limit complications and improve the quality of life.
