According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. BS Bui Thi Nhung (Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Nutrition Association, Head of the Nutrition Department of Sun Hospital), diabetic patients need to develop a menu suitable for their health condition and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
1. Prioritize foods with low glycemic index
People with diabetes should replace white rice with whole grains such as brown rice, and at the same time increase green vegetables to supplement fiber.
Foods with a low glycemic index help slow down the sugar absorption process, thereby limiting post-eating hyperglycemia.
2. Limit sweets and alcohol
Patients need to limit confectionery, soft drinks, dried fruits, overly sweet fruits, and alcohol and beer.
At the same time, you should not abuse sugars for dieters but need to use them according to the instructions of a nutritionist or doctor.
3. Balance substance groups and break down meals
In addition to controlling carbohydrates, patients also need to supplement appropriate amounts of protein, reduce saturated fat, especially if accompanied by dyslipidemia.
Dividing meals into smaller portions during the day and using specialized nutritional products when needed will help control blood sugar more effectively.
4. Medical examination and personalized menu development
For people with long-term diabetes or difficulty controlling blood sugar, nutritional counseling is essential.
Experts will develop a disease menu suitable for each level of disease, helping patients control blood sugar better and limit the risk of complications.
