Vietcombank increases charter capital
According to the unusual information announcement on May 7, 2025, Vietcombank's Board of Directors has approved Resolution No. 290/NQ-VCB-HDQT on amending the Banking Charter, updating the new charter capital after being approved by the State Bank.
Vietcombank's charter capital was adjusted to increase from VND 55,890 billion to VND 83,556 billion, equivalent to an increase of nearly VND 28,000 billion. The entire capital increase will come from the remaining after-tax profit, after having fully allocated funds by the end of 2021.
The capital increase is done through dividend distribution in shares, helping banks both retain internal resources and not "thinning" shareholders' wallets in the short term.
According to analysts, the capital increase shows that Vietcombank is proactively preparing a strong financial foundation to expand growth space, increase the ability to provide credit to large customers, meet international standards such as Basel III, and invest heavily in digital transformation.
Comparing with Big4: The charter capital race is getting fiercer
With new charter capital reaching more than VND 83,556 billion, Vietcombank continues to hold the No. 1 position in the Big4 group of state-owned banks. However, this position is being strongly challenged when the remaining "big guys" plan to increase capital on a large scale.
BIDV currently has a charter capital of VND 70,213 billion and has submitted a plan to increase it by more than VND 21,600 billion through share dividends. If completed, BIDV will increase its charter capital to nearly VND91,870 billion - surpassing Vietcombank and becoming the bank with the largest charter capital in the system.
VietinBank currently owns a charter capital of VND 53,700 billion and was approved by the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders on April 18, 2025 for a stock dividend plan of 44.64%, equivalent to nearly 2.4 billion shares. If the issuance is successful, VietinBank's charter capital will increase to VND 77,671 billion. The specific issuance time will be decided after receiving approval from the competent authority.
Agribank, a bank with 100% state capital and not yet equitized, currently has a charter capital of about VND51,600 billion. In the period of 2022-2024, Agribank has been allocated an additional VND 17,100 billion from the State budget and is currently continuing to propose being allocated an additional VND 10,000 billion per year to meet the need to expand agricultural and rural credit.
