On May 8, the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee issued a decision to establish a Steering Committee for the development of the Ho Chi Minh City urban railway network system.
Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Nguyen Van Nen was assigned to be the Head of the Steering Committee.
The Steering Committee is responsible for directing the implementation and organization of important orientations and resolutions of the Central and the National Assembly related to the development of the urban railway system in Ho Chi Minh City.
These include Conclusion No. 49 of the Politburo on the orientation for the development of Vietnam's railway transport and Resolution No. 188 of the National Assembly on piloting a number of specific mechanisms and policies, especially to develop the urban railway network system in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
Along with Mr. Nguyen Van Nen, key leaders of Ho Chi Minh City also joined the Steering Committee. Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc is the Standing Deputy Head of the Committee.
Other Deputy Heads of the Committee include: Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee Nguyen Thanh Nghi; Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council Nguyen Thi Le; Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City Nguyen Phuoc Loc.
The Steering Committee also has 19 members who are leaders of key agencies of the city, including the City People's Committee, the City Party Committee, the Inspection Committee, the Propaganda and People Committee, the Internal Affairs Committee, the City Inspectorate and the departments, agencies and local leaders.
The standing agency of the Steering Committee is the Department of Construction, using the existing apparatus and personnel to undertake assigned tasks.
The Steering Committee works on the principle of collective, under the direct leadership of the Standing Committee and the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee. The implementation decisions and content will be decided by the Head of the Steering Committee on the basis of clear assignment and assignment.
In addition to directing departments, branches and localities to speed up project progress, the Steering Committee also has the task of reviewing and proposing mechanisms to protect and encourage cadres, civil servants and workers to be proactive, creative, dare to think, dare to do, dare to take responsibility for the common good.
The goal is to create a favorable environment for the urban railway project implementation team to maximize efficiency.

According to the plan by 2035, Ho Chi Minh City will invest in the construction of 7 metro lines with a total length of about 355 km, to meet 40 - 50% of the demand for travel by public transport.
In the next phase from 2035 to 2045, the metro network will continue to be expanded by 155 km, bringing the total length of the system to 510 km.
One of the upcoming important steps is the Metro Line 2 project (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong), expected to start construction in December 2025.
This metro line is more than 11 km long, of which 9.2 km is underground, the rest is the elevated section and the access road to Tham Luong depot (District 12). The project will include 9 underground stations and 1 elevated station.
