Pregnancy is a 9-month journey (about 40 weeks), divided into three main stages. Among them, the first three months (first 12 weeks) are considered the most important foundation.
According to Dr. N Sapna Lulla - Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology Consultation Group at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru (India), a woman's body will undergo a series of physiological and emotional changes during this period.
Most women begin to notice obvious signs in the 5th or 6th week. Typical symptoms include: prolonged fatigue, frequent urination, hormonal changes leading to mood swings, cravings for food or fear of smell. In particular, morning sickness and nausea can last for the first three months or longer depending on each person's constitution.
Although it cannot completely prevent natural changes, Dr. N Sapna Lulla shares some methods to help pregnant women go through this stage more gently:
1. Prioritize fiber-rich foods from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Supplement lean protein and maintain enough water to reduce constipation and fatigue. Dividing meals instead of overeating will help control nausea effectively. Ginger tea or ginger candy are natural remedies that help reduce morning sickness well.
2. Use prenatal vitamins, especially folic acid and iron as prescribed by your doctor to support the development of the nervous system and blood production for the fetus.
3. Pregnant women need to ensure enough sleep of 7-8 hours per day, maintain a comfortable spirit, avoid stress and maintain gentle physical activity.
The American Pregnancy Association (APA) recommends that women see a doctor within 8 weeks of their last period and maintain a regular check-up at least once a month.
In addition to normal symptoms, pregnant women need to be taken to a medical facility immediately if dangerous warning signs appear such as: vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, high fever causing weakness, headache accompanied by blurred vision or shortness of breath. Early identification of complications is key to ensuring safety for both mother and baby.
