The impact of cotton pillowcases on hair
According to Dr. Kriti Lohia, Executive Director & consultant dermatologist at Cocoona Clinic (Gurgaon, India), although the cotton pillowcase is soft, it causes a lot of friction when you turn your head while sleeping. This friction roughens the hair cuticle and outer layer to protect hair, making hair susceptible to frizz and breakage. In particular, dry hair, curly hair or hair that has been chemically treated is more susceptible to damage.
In addition, cotton also absorbs moisture from hair and scalp, taking away the necessary amount of natural oils to help hair become soft and elastic. This condition will prolong hair dry and make it easier to crack.
Why should you choose silk or satin pillowcases?
To minimize the negative effects of cotton pillowcases, Dr. Lohia recommends switching to using pillowcases made from silk or satin. These two types of materials have a smooth surface that helps hair slip easily without friction, thereby reducing pimples and breakage.
Silk not only helps retain the natural oil and moisture of hair but also has the ability to regulate temperature, does not cause allergies, which is very good for sensitive scalp. Satin, which is a type of fabric (not a fiber) is a more economical choice but still brings similar benefits in hair protection.
Knee hygiene and scalp protection
Kneel shells often accumulate sweat, excess oil and debris from hair care products. If not washed regularly, these dirt can stick to the hair, causing clogged hair follicles, scalp irritation and even dandruff. Dirty pillowcases are also an indirect cause of hair loss and weak hair roots.
Dr. Lohia recommends washing your pillowcases three to four times a day, or every day if you have oily scalp or use a lot of hair care products.
Tips for hair care when you can't replace the pillowcase
If you can't replace the silk or satin pillowcase immediately, you can:
Wrap your hair with a soft, small towel to reduce friction.
Gently form loose hair in a loose bun or hair braid before bed, avoid tying it tightly because it can cause hair extensions and hair loss over time.
Note
Kneel is not only a familiar item when sleeping but also an important factor that silently affects hair health. Changing your pillowcase to silk or satin, keeping it clean and adjusting small habits before bed will help you have soft, strong hair and look more radiant every day.
