Psychological medicine to help children overcome academic inferiority complex

HOÀNG LỘC (T/H) |

Understanding and accompanying properly is the golden key to help children overcome the inferiority complex of poor academic performance and regain their love for learning.

1. Decoding the causes and removing psychological barriers for children

Insecurity about academic ability often does not come from children's innate abilities but from pressures and comparisons around them.

Stop comparing and labeling negative things: Unintentional sayings like "Why are you someone else's child..." or "Why are you so slow to understand" will unintentionally nail the psychology of failure into the child's mind. Accept your child's current abilities with a calm and respectful attitude.

Listen and relieve fear: Listen to your child share about the difficulties in school without interrupting or scolding. When feeling the protection from parents, children will feel less lonely and scared by unsatisfactory academic results.

2. Change perspective: Focus on progress instead of scores

Children need to see the value of effort instead of just looking at the dry numbers on the transcript.

Break down learning goals: Instead of putting pressure to achieve excellent students immediately, let's set small, short-term goals with our children such as: completing homework on time or improving 1 point in a weak subject.

Recognize and praise the smallest effort: When your child makes progress, even if it's just understanding a difficult math problem, give them specific compliments. Timely recognition from the family will add strong motivation to help them break down feelings of inferiority.

3. Find a learning method that suits your strengths

Each child has a different type of intelligence; being bad at a few subjects in class does not mean that children are comprehensively incompetent.

Discover your child's learning style: Some children learn well through images, some through movement or sound. Observe to adjust the homeschooling method to best suit your child instead of imposing rigid traditional methods.

Take advantage of and develop other strengths: If your child is not strong in natural sciences but has a talent for drawing, sports or communication, create conditions for them to develop these skills. Confidence in another field will spread and create a positive mentality for cultural learning.

4. Building a positive companion environment between family and school

Helping children overcome psychological barriers requires smooth coordination from many sides to create the safest space for children.

Exchange openly with teachers: Proactively contact homeroom teachers to understand your child's situation in class, and at the same time ask teachers to support and encourage them, avoid making your child ashamed in front of friends.

Be patient and do not create virtual pressure: Learning is a long-term journey. Give your child time to change and always affirm that the love of parents for their child is unconditional, regardless of exam results.
