Recently, SCMP reported a story that caused a stir on Chinese social networks about a man who secretly hired a surrogacy company to have a daughter, after his only daughter refused to give birth to him.
This incident not only shocked the wife but also raised many ethical and legal issues surrounding surrogacy in modern society.
According to a report from Ha Nam TV (China), one day, a woman surnamed Guo, 53 years old, returned home and discovered a strange woman holding a newborn baby in her house.
When asked about the child's identity, Guo was told that it was her and her husband's child, and that the strange woman was just a maid.
The funny explanation made Ms. Guo want to find out the truth. The truth is quickly exposed, Guo's husband paid a brokerage company to hire a surrogate mother, in order to have a grandchild he wanted, after their only daughter, 29, announced that she had no intention of getting married or having children.
"My husband said, if there are no grandchildren, what should I do to raise a daughter? That is a lack of filial piety according to traditional culture," Ms. Guo shared.
The story became more tense when Guo discovered that her husband had stolen her ID card to make a birth certificate for the child, recording her as the mother. After learning about this, Guo expressed her anger and threatened to divorce her husband.
Guo's daughter, surnamed Gao, could not accept her father's actions. She was worried that her parents would divorce and she would have to shoulder the responsibility of raising the child. "This is funny," Gao said.
The Guo family's story is not the only one. A 62-year-old man in Ha Nam province also hired a surrogacy company without informing his family, just hoping to have a son.
Although surrogacy is illegal in China, many people still find ways to circumvent the law to fulfill their wish to have children.
According to SCMP, surrogacy is a controversial issue in Chinese society. The incident of Guo's family sparked a heated discussion on social media, with many expressing their support for the ban on surrogacy, saying that this humiliates the dignity of women.
At the same time, the story also reflects the conflicts between tradition and modernity, between personal desires and family responsibilities in today's Chinese society.
