Vietnamese women live 5 years longer than men on average
According to the 2024 Mid-Term Population and Housing Census Report of the General Statistics Office, the number of elderly people (aged 60 and over) reached 14.2 million (an average increase of 560,000 people per year), an increase of 2.8 million people compared to 2019 and 4.7 million people compared to 2014.
Thus, the proportion of elderly people in our country is currently about 14% (compared to the total population of 101.1 million people).
It is forecasted that by 2030, the number of people aged 60 and over in Vietnam will be approximately 18 million, an increase of nearly 4 million people compared to 2024.
The aging index in 2024 is 60.2%, an increase of 11.4 percentage points compared to 2019 and 16.9 percentage points compared to 2014. The aging index is forecast to continue to increase in the following years.
Previously, in June 2024, the General Statistics Office announced that the average life expectancy of Vietnamese people in 2023 was 74.5 years old, a sharp increase compared to previous years (about 73.7 years old). In the latest results of the Population and Housing Census, this number continued to increase to 74.7 years old.
In particular, the average life expectancy of Vietnamese men is 72.3 years old, and that of women is 77.3 years old. That is, women live 5 years longer than men on average. According to science, in addition to physiological factors, the cause is men's living habits and health care awareness.
Although life expectancy has increased, on average each elderly person in Vietnam suffers from 3-4 diseases, usually non-communicable diseases, musculoskeletal diseases, dementia, hearing loss, blood pressure... The population is aging rapidly, the number of elderly people is increasing, but the medical services to meet treatment and long-term care in Vietnam are assessed as very modest.
Vietnamese men get married for the first time 4.2 years later than women
According to the survey results, the proportion of the population aged 15 and over who have ever been married is 74.9%. Of these, 65.3% are married, 6.7% are widowed, 2.6% are divorced and 0.3% are divorced.
The average age of first marriage of Vietnamese people is 27.3, an increase of 2.1 years compared to 2019. Of which, men get married for the first time at 29.4 years old, women get married for the first time at 25.2 years old (a difference of 4.2 years).
Women in urban areas marry 2.7 years later than women in rural areas (26.8 years vs. 24.1 years). The difference between urban and rural men is 1.5 years (30.3 years vs. 28.8 years).
Compared to statistics in June 2024, the age of first marriage of Vietnamese youth in 2023 is 27.2 years old (25.1 years old for women and 29.3 years old for men). Thus, Vietnamese people are increasingly tending to marry late.
Among them, young people in Ho Chi Minh City get married the latest in the country with the average age of first marriage being 30.4, an increase of 3 years compared to 2019.
