On the evening of December 12 (local time), the Overseas Press Association in Hollywood (HFPA) held a ceremony to announce the nomination list for the categories of the 80th Golden Ball Awards.
According to Variety, The Banshees of Inisherin, a dark comedy about a broken friendship set in a civil war in Ireland, has led the nominations for the 2023 Golden award. The film received 8 nominations, including Best Film in the category of comedy or comedy, and nominated Martin McDonagh for Best Director.
"Everything Everywhere All at Once" follows closely with 6 nominations. The female lead Duong Tu Quynh and the supporting actor of Vietnamese origin Quan Ke Huy also received nominations in the actor category. The works The Fabelmans, Babylon, Elvis all received 5 nominations.
Notably, in the Best Drama category, the blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water has appeared even though it has not been officially released in theaters. The film competes with Elvis, The Fabelmans, TAR and Top Gun: Maverick.
However, Variety said that Avatar 2 received many compliments from critics, after its premiere in London, UK last weekend.
In the Best Foreign Language Film category, director Park Chan Wook's "Decision to leave" participated. The work is expected to continue the winning streak of two Korean films Parasite and Minari in previous Golden both world seasons.
According to Variety, unlike the Oscar, the Golden Ball award separates the comedy, music and drama genres, allowing for an expansion of the honorary fields, including cinema and television.
A few years ago, the nominations for the Golden award were considered an important milestone of the award season - a sign showing who is up and who is losing the advantage in the hunt for the Oscar as well as many other titles. However, a series of scandals and celebrity farewells with the award have reduced the impact of the Golden award.
To improve the situation, HFPA has increased the diversity of its board members, by adding 21 new journalists to its official list, and 10% of black voters.
The 80th Golden Ball Awards will take place on January 10, 2023 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Los Angeles, USA.
