Doctor Sleep is the sequel to the classic horror film The Shining (1980). After many years, the boy Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) of the past has now become a middle-aged man. However, the ghosts and cruelty of his father in childhood still haunted him psychologically. Danny has never been able to live a peaceful life, and always has to run away from his past.
The turning point came when the girl Abra ( Kyliegh Curran) appeared. Abra is the same person with the same hearing ability as Danny. The girl discovered a group of people (called True Knot) specializing in hunting for people with the ability to penetrate the eyes to slaughter and inhale clean vitality in search of immortality.
At this time, Danny had two options: continue to run away, hide his own abilities and witness True Knot killing innocent people, people like Abra; or awaken his own ability to stand up and fight with the little girl.
With the wide influence and popularity of the 1980 film, Doctor Sleep is expected to top the North American box office upon its release. However, after 3 days of release, the film is only in second place.
According to Boxoffice's statistics, as of November 10 (US time), "Doctor Sleep" earned 14.1 million USD (equivalent to 330 billion VND), 17.9 million USD (about 410 billion VND) less than the first-placed film "Midway". The paradox here is that Midway only achieved 41% of Rotten Tomatoes scores while Doctor Sleep always received positive feedback from the audience and film critics with 76% from experts and 90% from the audience out of nearly 4,000 votes.
Explaining the reason for this, many people think that the movie Midway attracted many audiences thanks to its premiere near the US Veterans Day (November 11) and Doctor Sleep is still a movie worth watching.
Doctor Sleep inherits all the horror of its predecessor and even makes it more haunting, commented Vicky Roach, film critic for the Daily Telegraph.
Peter Travers, a film critic and journalist for People and Rolling Stone, said: "The sequel to "The Shining" has too much inspiration to borrow. But the perfect combination of Stanley Kubrick and Stephen King still has things that make you unable to sleep at night."
