Based on the webtoon, the film "Karma" tells the story of 6 characters, including the unknown man who witnessed the accident (Park Hae Soo), Ju Yeon (Shin Min Ah) - a surgeon haunted by injuries, a debtor (Lee Hee Joon), Gil Ryong (Kim Sung Kyun), a doctor who achieved the practice of traditional medicine (Lee Kwang Soo) and Yu Jeong (Gong Seung Yeon). They get entangled in unfortunate relationships that cannot be escaped when pursuing their own desires.
The 6-episode film is directed by Lee Il Hyoung. In it, each episode is told from the perspective of a different character. Explaining this, the director emphasized the importance of the plot and the importance of the relationships between the characters in creating the knots of the work.
"I tend to lose focus and think about other things if a drama doesn't make me curious about the next episode. This is the reason I keep thinking about how to make viewers unable to resist clicking on the next episode of Karma right away, the director said.
According to Lee Il Hyoung, he wants viewers to gradually discover the knots, like untied a thread, instead of grasping them all at once. "By the end of all 6 episodes, I want the audience to fully understand how these unfortunate relationships take place and why the film is like "Karma".
Meanwhile, the cast praised the script and said that this was the motivation that motivated them to participate in the film. According to Park Hae Soo, he is attracted to the tense and intense plot. His character, although selfish and hateful, also has silly and humorous aspects, making the role more interesting.
For Shin Min Ah, she focused on expressing the "deepness and weight of pain in real life" when playing the character with insomnia and living in pain from past injuries.
Lee Hee Joon said he likes to structure each episode with a different character. His character was chased by loan sharks, leading to him being forced to kill his father. To make the bad choice of role reasonable, the actor made many inner monologues as a consideration of whether to kill his father or not.
Regarding whether the film "Karma" can maintain the same appeal as its predecessor - "When Life Is for You as a Tangerine", Lee Il Hyoung admitted that there was some pressure, but the director was confident in the unique appeal of a new "brain".
"It would be a lie to say that I don't feel any pressure, but our drama has its own genre appeal. If the audience likes the warmth of humanity in the previous work, they may find the " Spicy flavor" of this work even more satisfying" - the director added.
The film "Karma" is scheduled to premiere on April 4.
