According to Newsen, the music review results announced by KBS on October 23 showed that the song "Mantra" by female idol Jennie of Blackpink group was considered unsuitable for broadcasting, because the lyrics violated Article 46 of the Broadcast Review Regulations, when referring to specific brands and products.
In the lyrics, Jennie mentioned the burger brand “In-N-Out”. The song “Mantra” did not pass the censorship, which means Jennie will not be able to perform the song on KBS’s weekly music show Music Bank.
Previously, Blackpink had many songs banned from broadcasting by KBS for many reasons.
Blackpink pursues the hip-hop style, so in many of their music products, they use lyrics with strong personalities, freedom, and sensitivity. In 2016, when Blackpink debuted with the song "Boombayah", it was immediately banned by KBS because of sensitive words in Lisa's rap part.
The songs “See U Later” and “Tally” were also not broadcast due to inappropriate language.
Several other cases were banned for mentioning the same brand name as Jennie's "Matra", such as the group's 2022 songs "Shut Down" and "Pink Venom".
“Pink Venom” references ''Chanel'' and ''Celine'', “Shut Down" references ''Lamborghini'' in its lyrics.
The most memorable case was when the song “Kill This Love” failed KBS censorship because it violated traffic laws.
In the MV, Rose has scenes of driving without a seat belt, speeding, and standing in front of vehicles on the road.
Songs that violate the rules must change their lyrics or scenes to fit on KBS if they want to be broadcast.
