According to data from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) and the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS), "Colony" has surpassed 2 million views in just 5 days of screening, becoming the fastest Korean film released in 2026 to reach this milestone. As of the morning of May 28, the film had sold 2,378,510 tickets.
The film is directed by Yeon Sang Ho - a name that once created a global phenomenon with "Train to Busan" and "Peninsula". However, unlike previous projects focused on survival and chasing speed, "Colony" expands the zombie world to science fiction and social psychology.
In the film, Jun Ji Hyun plays biologist Kwon Se Jung - who is trapped in the building where the biological disaster occurred along with many other characters. Here, infected creatures no longer simply act instinctively but are connected to each other as a collective living system.
According to Yeon Sang Ho, the idea of zombies with "herd intelligence" originated from his interest in artificial intelligence (AI) and crowd psychology in modern society. The director believes that AI is like a synthesis of popular and majority thinking of humans today.
He said that in a world where collective thinking is increasingly dominant, what makes people special may lie in their ability to maintain their own views and not be drawn into the crowd. Therefore, Jun Ji Hyun's character Se Jung is built as someone who always holds their own views and is willing to go against the crowd to find a way to survive.
This creates a big difference between "Colony" and many previous Korean zombie movies. If "Train to Busan" exploits the fear of epidemics and survival instincts in a narrow space, then "Colony" expands the story to the fear of assimilation and loss of personal consciousness.
Korean media commented that Yeon Sang Ho continues to show his strength in exploiting human nature through many different genres. Before "Colony", the director who once attracted attention with the low-budget film "The Ugly" - a work exploiting formalism and human desires, unexpectedly surpassed the 1 million ticket sales mark.
Notably, "Colony" also shows a major shift in Yeon Sang Ho's production scale. If "The Ugly" only has a budget of about 200 million won, "Colony" is invested with about 20 billion won, becoming one of the biggest zombie blockbusters of Korean cinema recently.
In addition to Jun Ji Hyun and Ji Chang Wook, the film also features Koo Kyo Hwan, Shin Hyun Bin, Kim Shin Rok and Go Soo. Among them, Koo Kyo Hwan is considered a factor that creates many surprises when taking on the character Seo Young Cheol - the biologist who started the disaster in the film.
In Vietnam, the film is scheduled to premiere from June 12 under the name "The Corpse".
