Open the doors to universities
Always under pressure with the scores of subjects in the high school graduation exam, Nguyen Linh Nhi (a first-year university student, Hanoi) decided to use an international certificate combined with high school exam scores as a safe option for university admission. Currently, Nhi has been admitted to a university in Hanoi that she desires.
"Before entering grade 12, I learned about the international certificates that universities require during the admission process. Because I started a bit later than other students, I chose to review and take the TOEFL iBT exam to have time to study the subjects in class.
In addition to accurately assessing English proficiency, this test also saved me a lot of time at that time. Because TOEFL iBT will test all skills in one test" - Nhi shared.
Using international tests such as TOEFL iBT not only serves the purpose of studying, university admission, and as an output standard at schools. In addition, this certificate is also used in the job application process and is one of the necessary conditions for settling in many countries.
Currently, universities in Vietnam are proactive in terms of time and form of admission. In 2024, the Academy of Finance will use 5 admission methods. By combining international English certificates with high school graduation exam results, international certificates will be converted to a 10-point scale and replace English scores in the admission combination. In particular, with a TOEFL iBT score of 55 - below 60, candidates will receive 9.5 points in English; above 60 points correspond to 10 points in English.
National Economics University reserves 30% of admission based on the conversion of international English certificates with high school exam scores. With a TOEFL iBT certificate (excluding TOEFL home edition) from 94 - 101, candidates will receive 9 points in English; from 102 and above, they will receive 10 points in English...
According to Ms. Doan Nguyen Van Khanh - CEO of IIG Vietnam, TOEFL iBT is the test that will impress the admissions board, because the test scores are based on the standards of the TOEFL test system.
At the same time, this test is accepted and preferred globally. For example, in Australia and New Zealand, this test is accepted by 100% of universities and all types of immigration visas. More than 80% of graduate programs in Canada prefer to use this test.
"TOEFL iBT certificate also brings advantages in admission to universities in Vietnam. Currently, the results of this test are the criteria for direct admission, priority admission or extra points at nearly 100 universities and colleges. Moreover, this is also a tool to assess English output standards when students graduate from university" - Ms. Van Khanh emphasized.
TOEFL iBT is scored simultaneously by human examiners and AI
According to statistics from the Educational Testing Service (ETS), most universities in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany and Asia use the TOEFL iBT test for admission. Of which, over 90% of schools in the US prioritize the TOEFL iBT over other English certificates. The reason is that this test more accurately assesses English proficiency in a learning environment.
From 2024, the TOEFL iBT will use AI to simultaneously score the writing and speaking sections with human examiners. This will minimize subjectivity and shorten the time to return results to 4 days. The reading and listening sections will display scores immediately after the candidate presses the finish button.
According to IIG Vietnam CEO Doan Nguyen Van Khanh, the computer-based version of the TOEFL iBT test now takes only 116 minutes, making it the only standardized English test for 4 skills with a test time of less than 2 hours.
The new TOEFL iBT test format has been streamlined, eliminating unscored questions. The reading section has been reduced to one passage and its accompanying questions. The independent writing section has been replaced with an academic discussion section to increase practical application.
“Candidates may retake the TOEFL iBT to improve their scores with a 3-day gap between the two test sessions. The final test result sheet will display a comparison table detailing the highest score for each skill achieved by the candidate across different test sessions.
Currently, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) - the organization that administers international standardized tests - offers free TOEFL iBT test preparation resources, including practice tests for candidates to familiarize themselves with the content and practice directly like a real exam.
According to the survey, the error between the mock test scores and the real test scores is insignificant, only about 5 points" - Ms. Khanh added.
The TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test) is designed and developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). This is a comprehensive test to assess English proficiency in four skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. In Vietnam, the TOEFL iBT is considered one of the methods for admission to universities.
