Along with traditional admission methods such as admission based on high school graduation exam scores, direct admission, priority admission... more and more Vietnamese universities accept the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test). This opens up many opportunities for candidates.
At the seminar "SAT - Golden ticket to university" held today (September 22), Mr. Phan Minh Duc - Academic Director of Future class and speakers shared many useful information, helping students and parents gain more understanding about the SAT test, as well as the current trend of using SAT in university admissions.
SAT is an important test for admission to universities and colleges in the United States with the purpose of accurately measuring the knowledge and skills of high school students preparing for higher education.
Not only widely popular in the US, the SAT is also accepted in many universities in Canada, Australia, the UK... In recent years, the SAT has been one of the exams used for admission to many universities in Vietnam. However, the SAT is also a stepping stone to move forward in the future, not only used for admission to universities.
According to Mr. Duc, SAT is not a language test but a test of logical and critical thinking skills, so it is necessary to have a clear view of SAT. Therefore, studying is a daily accumulation, it is necessary to learn about the exam, make a specific roadmap, clearly outline the time you can study for SAT. During the exam preparation process, for each question, you need to do the steps from beginning to end, you should spend time learning vocabulary first and getting familiar with English. Then practice the topics, focusing on the questions.
"With the SAT, you should focus first on English like reading skills. Besides, studying is not about how many hours you study that week but how much time you actively study that day. You should create an advantage from the beginning by planning a SAT review schedule" - Mr. Phan Minh Duc emphasized.
Sharing the same opinion with Minh Duc, Tran Vu Manh Duc - admitted to Hanoi University of Science and Technology thanks to achieving 1,590/1,600 points on the SAT - shared: "To start with the SAT, students should choose to take a practice test first to know if they are ready for the SAT or not. Based on the test results and the available foundations, students can summarize where they stand. From there, they can outline the time, study process, and knowledge that needs to be focused on to be able to take the SAT."
Sharing about the SAT study method, with the SAT reading comprehension test, Manh Duc said that the vocabulary for the test is often specialized, highly technical, so it is quite difficult to understand, so test takers should consider those new English words as nouns. Then, they can find the wrong sentences to eliminate and easily choose the correct sentence in the test.
In Vietnam, many schools use SAT scores - a standardized test in the US - for admission, of which Hanoi University of Science and Technology sets the highest requirement of 1,450/1,600, the rest are commonly from 1,100 or higher. Candidates applying to military schools need an SAT score of 1,068 or higher.
The SAT certificate is valid for 5 years. In Vietnam, the SAT exam is held several times a year in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City.
