From July 1, 2026, pensions and social insurance allowances will increase by an additional 8% according to Decree 162/2026/ND-CP of the Government. This information makes many retired teachers express joy when life continues to be concerned and ensured.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Sau, a retired preschool education official in Gia Binh commune, Bac Ninh province, said that her current pension is more than 10 million VND/month. After adjusting to increase by 8%, her pension will be more than 11 million VND/month.
According to Ms. Sau, the increased amount is not the most important thing, what makes her happy is feeling the State's concern for those who have worked in the education sector for many years.
In my locality, there is a former teacher association, people often mention increasing pensions. Everyone is excited because the lives of retirees continue to be concerned," Ms. Sau shared.
Mr. Phung Duc Hung, Trung Kenh commune, Bac Ninh province, said that the main source of income for retired teachers is monthly pensions, so the increase is of practical significance.
According to Mr. Hung, many teachers who have been attached to the teaching profession for decades, after retiring, still closely monitor policies related to social insurance, pensions and regimes for teachers.
Decree 162/2026/ND-CP stipulates that from July 1, 2026, it will adjust an additional 8% increase on the pension level, social insurance allowance and monthly allowance of June 2026 for 9 groups of subjects.
The groups to be applied include cadres, civil servants, public employees, and employees who are receiving pensions; commune-level cadres; soldiers; people's police; people receiving unemployment benefits; people receiving monthly occupational accident and disease benefits, and many other groups who are receiving benefits according to regulations.
Notably, the Government also increased the pension, social insurance allowance and monthly allowance to 3.8 million VND/month for some cases with low benefit levels after the overall increase.
People with a benefit level equal to or lower than 3.5 million VND/month will receive an additional increase of 300,000 VND/month. People with a benefit level above 3.5 million VND but below 3.8 million VND will be increased to 3.8 million VND/month.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, about 10,000 teachers retire each year. The pension adjustment is assessed by many teachers as not only contributing to improving life but also showing recognition for the contributions of the teaching staff.
Along with the pension increase policy, people should note that the 2025 Law on Teachers, effective from January 1, 2026, also brings many changes related to teachers' retirement age.
According to new regulations, male teachers retire at the age of 61 years and 6 months, female teachers retire at the age of 57 in 2026. In the following years, the retirement age will continue to gradually increase according to the roadmap until reaching 62 years old for men and 60 years old for women.
For preschool teachers, the retirement mechanism is applied a maximum of 5 years earlier if they wish and are eligible to pay social insurance for 15 years or more without being deducted from the pension benefit rate.
Accordingly, in 2026, male preschool teachers can retire from about 56 years and 6 months old, and female preschool teachers from about 52 years old. This regulation is assessed to be suitable for the high-pressure nature of preschool teachers' jobs.
The 2025 Law on Teachers also allows some groups of highly qualified teachers such as doctors, associate professors, professors or teachers in the field of in-depth expertise to extend their working time if they have the need and meet the conditions according to regulations.
